Emily Alt

Year Hired at GLCS: 2017

Ms. Alt is a Nationally Board Certified English teacher who has worked in a variety of secondary public schools. She worked for 7 years in Chicago Public Schools during which time she taught English 9-12 and coached the spoken word poetry team for the Louder than a Bomb poetry festival. After moving back to her home state of Michigan, Ms. Alt had the privilege of working in Northview Public Schools as a 9th grade English teacher and in Grand Rapids Public Schools as an administrative member of the Design Team for the new Public Museum High School. She has a deep love for and obsession with the late author Pat Conroy and was lucky enough to attend his 70th birthday party in South Carolina in 2016. She brings enormous energy and passion for reading and literature to her classroom and can usually be found reading the newest young adult literature in her spare time. Her favorite question to ask students is, "What are you reading?" When not reading or teaching, Ms. Alt enjoys distance running, practicing yoga, photography and spending time with her husband and dogs. She and her husband are in the (long) process of restoring a farmhouse from 1857. They are always looking for help!
