Come support our musicians and enjoy a night of inspiring performances!

Each year, our 8th grade students explore the rich history of Leelanau County through hands-on learning experiences. From welcoming community guests into the classroom to working alongside caretakers from four historical locations, students become “history detectives” as they research individuals connected to Glen Arbor Township Cemetery, Bland Cemetery, Maple Grove Cemetery, and the Poor Farm Barn.
On Friday, students spent the day visiting all three cemeteries, along with the Poor Farm Barn, Empire Museum, and the National Park Visitors’ Center. Following these visits, students are now creating chronological biographies of individuals (or families) connected to these sites. Using resources such as census records, family history websites, and archival documents, students are uncovering and preserving stories—many of which have little recorded history.
We also made a “pit stop” to enjoy lunch at Cherry Republic—a highlight for many of our students!
This meaningful project not only strengthens students’ research and writing skills, but also serves as a contribution to the Leelanau community by helping document and honor its past. Selected student work may be published, archived, or made available for future researchers.
We are proud of our students for helping preserve the history of our community while gaining a deeper appreciation for the people who shaped it. A special thank you to Melissa Okerlund and Kira Vasquez for organizing such an incredible experience for our students!

The results were impressive—students shared creative, thoughtful, and highly marketable ideas. We are grateful for our continued partnership with Quarkmine in providing this opportunity.
A key part of the learning experience was that students worked with a specifically tailored AI coding agent. This agent was designed with clear context—it “knew” the hardware students had available and that it was supporting seventh graders. With this level of specificity, the AI became an effective brainstorming partner, capable of generating code that aligned with student ideas—if students could clearly communicate what they wanted their invention to do.
One of the most powerful aspects of the experience was seeing how student communication evolved. The AI logged team transcripts, allowing us to observe the progression from vague or ambiguous questions to precise, well-structured coding requests. There were even moments of off-topic curiosity, followed by the AI’s gentle redirection back to the learning goals—an authentic reflection of the learning process.
Overall, it was a meaningful week of innovation, problem-solving, and growth in both communication and computational thinking.

The snow was deep, and the towering snowbanks remain a powerful reminder of just how fast and furious this storm was. One team member may have even fulfilled a childhood dream by spending the night on campus!
Your dedication, resilience, and hard work made all the difference—we truly appreciate you.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to see familiar faces enjoying stories and celebrating the joy of reading together. We look forward to a month full of great books, special guests, and lots of library fun!

Today, our 6th grade students spent an engaging and meaningful day at the Leelanau Outdoor Center, participating in hands-on activities that connected directly to what they are learning in school. Through outdoor exploration, teamwork, and guided activities, students applied classroom concepts to real-world situations, helping deepen their understanding and make learning more relevant.
Students worked collaboratively to problem-solve, observe nature, and think critically while having a ton of fun. The experience encouraged curiosity, communication, and perseverance while reinforcing academic skills and fostering connections between learning and the outside world.
In addition to academic connections, the day supported social-emotional growth as students practiced teamwork, responsibility, and self-management in a new setting. Overall, it was a valuable experience that allowed students to learn, reflect, and grow beyond the classroom walls.
And this is just Part One! In the Spring they will travel back to Leelanau Outdoor Center for 3 days and 2 nights of educational fun! Parents we will be reaching out for night time chaperones! A huge thank you to Carrie Brown for organizing this incredible experience that helps bring all their daily learning to life!
