Tommy's First Mates

Tommy’s First Mates is a student-led group that focuses on bringing awareness to, and decreasing the stigma surrounding, mental health through education and providing peer support. It’s based on research that high school students are more likely to seek help from a peer than a well-intentioned adult. We want to put that into action at Glen Lake and help provide well-trained students to others who may be struggling with a myriad of issues, from academic pressures to social conflicts, from problems at home to personal struggles.

Mission:
In honor of Tommy Reay, we’re seeking to normalize conversations around mental health in order to prevent the loss of other students.

Vision:
Through training, we seek to educate members and others through initiatives and building connections in our school and our community at large.

What Tommy's Mates has accomplished so far:

  • Capital Day 2021

  • Informational Sessions

  • Hike for Hope 2023

  • Sponsored multiple sporting events

What Tommy's Mates is looking forward to doing in the future:

  • Student orientation & Training to aid students in supporting other students

  • Building strong connections within our school for each student to know how and who to reach out to

  • Create community connections and relationships to expand awareness, advocate, and continue to normalize the conversation

  • Expand and network - Hike for Hope
