A little about the families:
Melissa Benovic and Family:
I work at Glen Lake Community School as a paraprofessional and have a 4th grader and a preschooler. It has been almost a year since my husband died of cancer. When he was diagnosed it was stage 4 and he wasn't given much time. But he held out for as long as he could and my kids and I got to take care of him and give him all our love. Throughout it all and as it continues to be, I know that being at the school is such a positive force in our life, I see my kids get to be happy.
-Melissa Benovic
Carrie Oleson and Family
Carrie Oleson is a Glen Lake mom to three teenage boys - Kingston, Liam, and Maddox- all active in school sports and familiar faces in the Glen Lake community.
Earlier this year, Carrie faced a sudden medical emergency that led to an unexpected colon cancer diagnosis and emergency surgery. This came shortly after she lost her job. She is now recovering, focusing on healing, and preparing for the next steps in treatment - all while staying present for her boys in the ways that matter most.
Throughout all of this, Carrie, her husband Justin, and their boys have been deeply moved by the love and support shown by the Glen Lake community. Being chosen as one of this year's Cancer Awareness Game recipients means more than they can say. The kindness from players, coaches, families, and neighbors has given them strength, comfort, and a powerful reminder that love truly does show up in real and meaningful ways when life gets hard.
Carrie is taking things day by day and is genuinely grateful to be surrounded by such a caring and generous community.
With love & gratitude,
Carrie, Justin, Kingston, Liam, and Maddox
