Our current 7th graders who are in the Community Connections class are spending the afternoon volunteering at 5 Loaves, 2 Fish. Did you know this local community support provides more than 600 meals a week? And our middle school students continue to be helpers in spreading the kindness! Thank you Mrs. Kira Vasquez for organizing these incredible opportunities!

Today, our 6th grade students spent an engaging and meaningful day at the Leelanau Outdoor Center, participating in hands-on activities that connected directly to what they are learning in school. Through outdoor exploration, teamwork, and guided activities, students applied classroom concepts to real-world situations, helping deepen their understanding and make learning more relevant.

Students worked collaboratively to problem-solve, observe nature, and think critically while having a ton of fun. The experience encouraged curiosity, communication, and perseverance while reinforcing academic skills and fostering connections between learning and the outside world.

In addition to academic connections, the day supported social-emotional growth as students practiced teamwork, responsibility, and self-management in a new setting. Overall, it was a valuable experience that allowed students to learn, reflect, and grow beyond the classroom walls.

And this is just Part One! In the Spring they will travel back to Leelanau Outdoor Center for 3 days and 2 nights of educational fun! Parents we will be reaching out for night time chaperones! A huge thank you to Carrie Brown for organizing this incredible experience that helps bring all their daily learning to life!

Glen Lake Middle School students in our Community Connections class spent the afternoon giving back in meaningful ways. Our 7th graders have been actively engaged in service learning, and today they volunteered several hours at Leelanau Christian Neighbors, helping set up their incredible Holiday Needs Gift-Giving Exchange.

Just last week, the same group donated their time and energy to 5 Loaves 2 Fish, a local organization that prepares meals for individuals and families in our community experiencing hunger and homelessness.

These experiences are true game changers for our students. They go beyond learning about service—students are living it. This is service learning at its best: building empathy, connection, and a deeper understanding of the impact they can have on the world around them.
