Glen Lake’s Eighth Graders are in the midst of a local history research project. They are continuing efforts started in 2020 to reconstruct lost records for the Glen Arbor Township Cemetery.
The cemetery was in use between 1880-1927. While only 13 gravesites have personalized headstones, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) recently revealed that it contains the gravesites of more than 88 individuals. Students are using documents like death certificates, obituaries, census data, and news clippings to craft biographies of the community members known to be buried there, four of whom were veterans of the Civil War.
To learn more about life in the area before and during the active years of the cemetery, students recently toured the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center, the Empire Museum, the Leelanau Historical Society Museum, and historic sites located within the village of Glen Arbor.
Today our students attend ed the Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery to recognize those individuals buried there.
The class owes special thanks to Linda Dewey, Andrew White, and other local historians for research help and resources. We are also grateful for local museum personnel: Dave Taghon, Bill Freeman, and Rich Anderson, staff of the Empire Museum; Kim Kelderhouse and staff of the Leelanau Historical Society Museum, and Tera John of the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who accompanied us on our trip. Thanks also go to the National Park staff at the Visitor Center and the Cherry Republic Public House for hosting all of us.
What an incredible learning experience our 8th graders complete each year. A great big shout out to Melissa Okerlund, our 8th grade teacher & hero who heads this up as an annual tradition of true learning!

Middle School Families -
Tomorrow is the last day of our Middle School book fair brought to us by our local Brilliant Book store. We receive 25% of all proceeds that will go directly back into purchasing more 'just right' books for the middle school student. Our goal is for every student to walk away with at least one book for the summer!
Students can bring cash, check or card to purchase items. Parents - you can always stop by the school if that is easier and we will excuse your child to go to the book fair with you! Lots of great options for all students!
If purchasing from the book fair is financially difficult for you at this time, please send me an email or call me and we will make sure your child(ren) receives a few books as well. No questions asked and confidential! rocheleaud@mylakers.org
We want books in the hands of our students all summer long!
